When you think of the Wheaties box, the iconic orange box with the image of a champion athlete, one name that comes to mind is Bruce Jenner. Bruce Jenner was a decathlete, an Olympic gold medalist, and a TV personality. But most importantly, he was the face of Wheaties for almost a decade.
The Early Years of Bruce Jenner
Bruce Jenner was born in 1949 in Mount Kisco, New York. He grew up in Newtown, Connecticut, and attended Newtown High School, where he was a star athlete. He excelled in football, basketball, and track and field, and earned a football scholarship to Graceland College in Iowa.
However, it was in track and field that Jenner truly shone. He was a decathlete, which meant he competed in ten different events, including the 100-meter dash, the high jump, and the shot put. He set a new personal best in the decathlon at the 1976 Olympic trials, which earned him a spot on the U.S. Olympic team.
The Olympic Gold Medal
In 1976, Jenner competed in the Montreal Olympics, where he won the gold medal in the decathlon. He set a new world record with a score of 8,618 points, and became an instant hero. Jenner was hailed as the greatest athlete in the world, and his victory was seen as a triumph for American sports.
The Wheaties Box
After his Olympic victory, Jenner became a household name. He appeared on numerous TV shows, including "The Love Boat" and "CHiPs." But perhaps the most famous endorsement deal he signed was with Wheaties.
Wheaties had been featuring athletes on its boxes since the 1930s, but Jenner was the first decathlete to grace the cover. His Wheaties box debut came in 1977, and he went on to appear on the box for almost a decade.
The Legacy of Bruce Jenner
Today, Bruce Jenner is known as Caitlyn Jenner, and she is a transgender rights advocate and TV personality. But her legacy as an athlete and a Wheaties box icon lives on. Jenner's Wheaties box is still considered one of the most iconic in the brand's history, and it is a testament to the power of sports and advertising.
Whether you remember Jenner as a decathlete, an Olympic champion, or a Wheaties box star, there is no denying that he is a true American icon.
